JOHANNA WILD was a four piece U.S. Hard Rock band initially formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1970 by singer/guitarist JON BUTCHER & guitarist Jeff Linscott.
A few formative line ups with various personnel populating the rhyhm section came and went before former THE JONESES bassist Jamie Pease joined the band & ex-SUNNY DOWN SNUFF drummer Glenn Evans completed the quartet.
After working up a live set which mixed strong original material with a smattering of cover songs, they hit the club circuit and quickly established a reputation for their live shows, building up a dedicated fan base throughout the North Eastern U.S. through their constant road work.
In 1973 Johanna Wild toured as support to SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE who were then promoting their 'Fresh' album.
By this time the group was being promoted by Charles Coppleman and Steve Fargnoli, who would later manage PRINCE.
Johanna Wild then did some recordings which were paid for by THE ROLLING STONES who were thinking of singning the group to be on their Sticky Fingers record label.
They recorded at Atlantic Recording Studio in New York City, played the Mercer Arts Center and CBGB'S several times and also auditioned at a Manhattan dance studio for Marshall Chess of Chess Records.
"When Chess finally arrived he was falling over in his chair and drooling and dropping his cigarette continuously. So much for that audition".
The band recorded more material in Boston but their managers, Neil and Lloyd Grossman, eventually gave up on the band as a result of the lack of interest in Johanna Wild from record companies.
It seemed like their moment may have passed & the constant touring had taken it's toll on the group who were burnt out & disillusioned.
Johanna Wild disbanded in late 1973, but after resting & reconsidering, they later reformed with a new line up and fresh management.
This new line up saw former BUCK drummer Derek Blevins replace Evans who went on to join CAP'N SWING, & bassist Troy Douglas 'T-Bone' Sutler III took the place of Jamie Pease.
Pease joined BUCK who would later record the 1977 45 'Just For You', & he would later form AUGUST who released a 1981 Mini LP entitled 'Sunny Days/Hot Nights'.
The new look Joanna Wild hit the road & quickly re-established themselves as one of the premier live acts in the North East through their constant touring.
Their new recordings received a lot of airplay on Boston radio stations, and in 1978 when Boston radio station WCOZ 97.5 were looking to put together a complilation LP featuring local acts they approached Joanna Wild who contributed the song 'Suzanne' to the project.
The eventual LP, 'The Best Of The Boston Beat', emerged the following year, but soon after it's release Johanna Wild disbanded again.
Butcher & Blevins immediately formed a new power trio which they christened JON BUTCHER AXIS.
After a couple of years of road work JBA signed a major label record deal & released 3 critically acclaimed LPs between 1983 & 1985 & toured with the likes of DEF LEPPARD, J. GEILS BAND, KISS, INXS, RUSH & SCORPIONS.
Butcher then began a successful solo career (usually still accompanied by Blevins), with his 1987 'Wishes' LP going gold in the U.S.
The Butcher/Blevis duo later returned to playing & recording with Axis again in the early 2000's, & continue alternating between Axis & Butcher's solo work to this day.
In addition to all this, Butcher also plays with the rootsier quartet BAREFOOT SERVANTS, who have released 2 albums to date.
