Good topic ! (clap4)
To name only melodic songs would take me a lifetime.
And not all melodic songs should be ballads in my humble opinion...

I've never been too hot on melodic metal, but some are the exceptions to the rule:

First album, that came into my mind reading the topic:
Praying Mantis - Time tells no lies
A giant of an album, 12 points on a Ten-scale at the very least. No album they released since was really to my liking, all too smooth and polished.

For me Blind Ego. From their album Numb the song called Death. For me it's hard to seperate melodic and prog, though. If melodic is defined as AOR then...... wel this is not for you.

Depends what we count as "melodic" - but:

Brainstorm - Unholy (Not that big fan of a band but I actually enjoy this their 2nd album quite much, not as mainstream as their later works with newer singer)
Cauldron Born - And Rome Shall Fall
Centaur - God Complex (IMO one of best past 80's melodic power metal albums)
Crimson Glory - Transcendence & S/t (if it classifies..)
Heaven's Gate - Livin' In Hysteria
Obsession - Methods of Madness
Running Wild - Death or Glory
RAM - Lightbringer
Scanner - Hypertrace
Titan Force - Winner / Loser
Virgin Steele - Age of Consent

That list is so random I can just laugh for myself though.. I have real problem creating a list for "melodic metal" since I rarely listen anything purely belonging to that genre. I know there are some melodic power/speed and such included. Oh well. If I think albums amongst all metal genres that I like - then in comparison to the best ones for me - only Running Wild's Death Or Glory and Crimson Glory releases hold special place in my top albums of all metal genres. The rest of those included in this "melodic" list of mine are good IMO but not top notch. Just not that much fan of a "melodic". Heavy/speed/NWOBHM/thrash of 80's here.

I class melodic metal as keyboard driven heavy metal, a step or two heavier then AOR.
Some examples of my favorites are:

UNIVERSE - Universe (1985)
ARROW - Diary of a Soldier MLP (1986)
N.J.B. - Soldier of Love 7" (1986)
WIZZARD - Ninya Warrior 7" (1986)
EMPIRE SAINT - Broken Dreams 7" (1989)
M.C. BLADE - Step into the Light MLP (1988)
REDSTORM - No Exeption of a Victim of Crime (1989)
TWILIGHT PROJECT - Twilight Project MLP (1986)
MAJESTY - Crusaders of the Crown MLP (1988)
TWO EAGLES REQUEST - Out of the Dark MLP (1990)
CANNON - Thunder and Lightning (1988)
CRACK JAW - Night Out (1985)
SIX FEET UNDER - Six Feet Under (1983)

Almost everything from PRETTY MAIDS

Helloween - Phantoms of Death
Sentenced - Awaiting the Winter Frost

I don't think of "melodic metal" as a genre or a particular sound, just metal that has melodies. Which is almost all of it except for the most brutal death/thrash.

That's very funny to me ...the Kick Axe reference, Here's the three:
1. Pretty Maids "jump the gun"
2. ALL Q5
3. Dokken "paris is burning"

I'm not sure about what do you mean ''melodic metal'' but i assume Heavy Metal more melodic than aggressive, NOT aor, if i'm out of topic please let me know.
Here are some bands i call melodic metal and i really like:

Oracle (UK) - Oracle (''Killer Queen'' is one of the best songs i've ever heard, MASTERPIECE...)
Praying Mantis (UK) - Time Tells No Lies (the same goes for ''Children Of The Earth'')
Lonely Heart (US) - Mirage
Universe (Swe) - Universe
Sherwood (UK) - Riding The Rainbow Ep (Melodic NWOBHM masterpiece)
Luv Hunter (US) - Luv Hunter
Panza Division (UK) - We'll Rock The World 7''
Mass (US) - Mass (Looking Good is a nice melodic metal song)

and bands from the NWOBHM that were more into the 70s prog rock movement with keyboards, atmospheres etc such as:

Mithrandir (UK) - Mgick 7'' and Dreamers Of Fortune 7''
Amazon (UK) - Hypnotizing You 7''
Avalon (UK) - Going Thru 7''
Beg To Differ (UK) - The Singer And The Artist 7''
Aurora (UK) - I'll Be Yor Fantasy 7''
Blinder (UK) - Marching To War 7''
Cryer (UK) - The Single 7''
Anthem (UK) - England 7''
to name a few...

You could also try bands such as Galahad (UK - Dreaming From The Inside 7'') or Emeraude (France - Geoffroy Lp) with a more spacey/progressive aproach but these bands are not metal.
