Excalibur was created in the early eighties as a neighborhood band consisting of brothers Jim Sullivan (drums and vocals) and Paul Sullivan (vocals) and their cousin Mike Sullivan (bass) and neighbors Jeff Smith (guitar) and Chris Goins (guitar). The original name of the band was SGS Express (Sullivan Goins Smith). Later, the band was renamed as Excalibur (not really sure how that came about) and Mike Sullivan was replaced by Jon Longton (bass). The band was a heavy metal band playing music such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. In the early eighties, the band participated in the Battle of The Bands competition at Edgewater and placed second, which resulted in recording a 45 with two original songs, “City of Light” and “Got to Have Your Love Tonight”. Shortly thereafter, the band broke up for a short period of time.
The band was reformed in the mid 80’s with Jim Sullivan, Paul Sullivan, Jeff Smith and the addition of Kevin O’Neill playing bass and Pat Ciarla on keyboards and vocals. Excalibur played various neighborhood bars and traveled around to locations such as Greenville and Chillicothe, Ohio and Maysville, Kentucky. Excalibur played until the late eighties when the members began to settle down with families. In the summer of 2006, the members were approached about getting back together. Everyone agreed and Excalibur was reborn with better than ever music and vocals featuring the five original members of the late 80’s:
Paul Sullivan - Lead Vocals (SGS Express)
Chris Goins - Guitar, Vocals (SGS Express)
Jeff Smith - Guitar (SGS Express)
Jon Longton - Bass
Jim Sullivan - Drums, Vocals (SGS Express)
