Twisted Sister originally played glam rock until Dee Snider joined in 1976 and took over as the songwriter. Jay Jay French and Eddie Ojeda had performed as the band's vocalists until then.

Snider quit Twisted Sister in 1987 following the failure of Love is for Suckers, then the band officially split-up in early 1988. They briefly reformed in 1997 for a one-off show at the Industry Club in New York (without Mark Mendoza) and in 1998 to record a song for the horror film Strangeland, written by and starring Dee Snider. Another one-off reunion took place in 2001 to play a benefit concert for the NYPD and FDNY Widows and Orphans Fund following the September 11th terror attacks alongside other NYC artists such as Anthrax, Overkill and Ace Frehley.

The classic Stay Hungry line-up fully reformed in 2003 as a touring act. Although they had not released an album featuring all-new material since 1987's Love Is for Suckers, they released a re-recording of Stay Hungry in 2004 and a Christmas album in 2006.

Since 2009 and the 25th anniversary of Stay Hungry, they have stopped wearing make-up and costumes permanently - something bassist Mark Mendoza had actually been doing since the beginning of the reunion anyway.

The band have been known to play low-key "secret" warm-up gigs as Bent Brother with the members not wearing any of their trademark make-up and elaborate costumes.

Following the death of drummer A.J. Pero, Twisted Sister embarked on their final tour dubbed "Forty and F**k It" in 2016 and then split-up. Mike Portnoy filled in for Pero on the tour.
