There´s this compilation called "Metal Battle" that came out in 1983 by Neat Records or Roadracer (?)
Anyways, few sources claim that it´s James Hetfield on the front cover and I just don´t think that´s the case. To me it looks like it´s John Sykes actually... Any ideas on this one? I guess it´s nothing special as a compilation, but since I´m all things NWOBHM, I´m always looking out for some of this stuff...

It Looks Like it Could be John Sykes But There's Always a Dead Give Away That White V-Guitar Couse James Hetfield Used That V-Guitar During 1980's i Believe But That Guitar Got Lost from What i've Heard or even Stolen (But's That Whole Other Story)

Anyway I Don't Remember John Sykes Even Useing a White V-Guitar or a V-Guitar in General Couse He's Always Seen Useing a Les Paul
But Then Again There is Another Guy on the Left of Him That Almost Looks Like Phil Lynott

I just wondered how and why would they put Hetfield in the cover of compilation in England, since Metallica´s first album was just out and they hadn´t been to UK yet, never mind that they were still quite unknown band then. Besides, the guy in the background (bassist?) looks nothing like Ron McGovney or Cliff Burton, as far as I´m concerned...

The compilation was also released through RoadRunner, a Dutch record compony specialised in releasing HM records). Tekst on the sleeve is in Dutch, so it is aimed at local audience.

James Hetfiled is definitely on the frontcover. That's how he looked on the days.

They already had made a name through the demo swapping circuit!!!

The album for me was actually a disappointment, since it was too clean and it was missing the heavy sound and freshness of the the Whiplash demo.

Hats off!!! Yes, it really is James Hetfield!!! I just thought that in 1983 it would´ve been impossible to have J. Hetfield on the cover of the compilation like that... never mind that then, case solved!!!

I always thought it was early James Hetfield, but it doesn't look to me like Ron McGovney or Cliff Burton beside him.

^Based on those videos and how Cliff thrashes his hair around, it's fairly clear that it's Cliff on the left side of the cover too.
