Left To Right : John, Quzzy, Scott
I'm posting this in memory of my old pal Quzzy who we lost a couple of weeks ago at just 49 years of age.
In the late '80s & early 90's we played together in a couple of bands and over those years we enjoyed many laughs & quite a few drinks together.
He later moved to Glasgow and became a local Metal legend through his many musical endeavours, particularly with grindcore extremists CO-EXIST.
I didn't see as much of him after he moved away, but when we did run into each other it was as if no time had passed at all.
A true one-off, he'll be sorely missed by all of us who knew him.
CENOTAPH were a short-lived Death Metal band from Dumbarton, Scotland, formed in 1991.
Guitarist Scott Watson & drummer Quzzy had previously played together in local Thrash/Hardcore legends THE BENSONS, under the nom-de-rocks 'Andy Hedges' & 'Lou-Brush Benson' respectively.
Completing Cenotaph's 4 piece line up were their old friend John Heaney on vocals & Davie Shields played bass.
Their only recording was the 5 song 'Cathedral Of Noise' demo which emerged later in the year.
Davie Shields then joined Doom Metal band TRINITY while Quzzy & John went on to form Rap Metal group CLAN DISCIPLES, who released a few demos.
At the same time Quzzy was also the drummer with CONFUSION CORPORATION who released 3 demos and a compilation album entitled 'I.F.F.'.
John & Quzzy then formed CO-EXIST with former Confusion Corporation members guitarist Charlie Perratt & bassist Danny McNabb.
This line-up recorded the first Co-Exist demo, 'Brethren' in 1997, before John departed & Quzzy then became the vocalist in addition to his drumming duties.
They recorded 4 further demos as a trio before expanding to become a 5 piece in time for their debut album, 'Surgical Removal Of The Teeth, Toenails And Drilling Of The Kneecaps' in 2005.
The album also featured former MEDULLA NOCTE, LAZARUS BLACKSTAR & KHANG member Paul Catten, (credited as 'The Cat'), on Vocals.
A 2nd Co-Exist album, 'Violent Intentions Begin With Slow Incisions', followed in 2010, then a pair of EPs, 'Skelf' & 'Why You Not F*cking Dead Yet?' were released in 2013 & 2020.
With Quzzy's death on April 10th 2021 Co-Exist now looks to be over.
